Alie in the Yellow Field
Background:
My friend Alie shared a photo of her with yellow field in the background when she and her husband have had their walk in Chippenham in an environment that captures the joy of spring time.
My friend had seen and liked my posts of lockdown paintings in Facebook and wished to be in one of my landscape paintings. I am really afraid of painting human figure as it’s very challenging and previously I limited myself to drawing stick figures! But, I believe that a positive ‘can do’ attitude can reap rewards, so I decided to embrace the challenge.
At the beginning of this acrylic painting, I used pencil to sketch the horizon and the road. The sky is a perfect smooth blend of cerulean blue, bright purple and white paints. A combination of raw sienna and mars black were made for faded and dark-coloured horizon. I blended white and black for the road with touches of dark to light brown along its sides and just played around with the visible little stones.
I always like the element of texture in every artwork so I decided to make it for the yellow field area. I used a furry string to dab emerald and sap green paints for the back of the field and lemon-yellow paint for the thick and thorny look flowers.
The tricky bit is the figure of Alie. I looked at several videos for strategy in painting human figure especially the blending of colours for the skin. I applied the strategy with white paint as the base plus discovery from mixing colours made this painting look like a work of an unknown professional.
For me, painting caters fun and enjoyment, both for the painter and the audience.
